Soapy Toothpaste

Last night Seth was brushing his teeth.  He came upstairs to tell me that he cleaned his toothbrush really well.....with soap!  Sure enough, the sink was full of bubbles.  I guess he did this every night.

This now solves our previous problem where Seth claimed that toothpaste was so, so gross--no matter what brand or flavor I bought.

It's All in the Face

As I am sweeping the floor I hear banging and clattering and all kinds of seemingly non-human noises followed by maniacal laughter coming from the basement.  Seth and Courtney are down there.

Me: SETH!
Seth: What?
Me: Find another game!
Seth: What????
Me: Find another game!
Seth: What???
Me:  FIND....ANOTHER....GAME!
Seth: What????
Me: Come upstairs.
Seth: OK.

Now I'm talking to him face to face.
Seth: Yes mom?
Me: I want you guys to stop smacking that empty coffee can over and over again and screaming your heads off.
Seth: Oh....is that your silly face?
Me: No.  It's my very serious, almost getting angry face.
Seth: Oh, well then I better change the game.

Rides

A little four year old giving his baby sister a ride.  Courtney demands it.  Seth happily obliges.  On these terms, they generally play well together.

Canola Field After a Storm

When Orange Makes me Crabby

My garden used to look beautiful...before Lincoln ripped out at least 15 bean plants...before the cutworms took my lettuce...before 1/4 of my trellises for my peas were pulled out by a Husky dog....before those rotten orange potato bugs attempted to take out my potatoes...AGAIN!

I have saturated my potato plants in about 5 litres of poison by now.  I go out every week of two with my little spray bottle and kill the newest generation of potato bugs.  We're definitely not going for organic potatoes here.... I'm just trying to keep some sort of potato crop for the fall.

We've had a meal with the new potatoes.  They were YUMMY!  Let's see if I can salvage another couple of meals.

Of Drowning Mice

Last night in the middle of supper Paul had something to say.
"Guess what!  There's a dead mouse in Lincoln's water!"
All the kids looked up with interest.
Lindsay immediately exclaimed, "Let's go poke it with a stick!"
In about 4 seconds the table had been vacated by 4 children who ran to retrieve a stick so that they could each poke the waterlogged rodent before fishing it out and feeding it to Lincoln.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Anything that is found dead on this property my kids will poke with a stick and feed to their dog--water beetles, cockroaches, moths, mice, etc.  Please don't die here if you don't want the same treatment.

Building a Sandbox.....In 30 Minutes!

At the corner of the lawn stands a flower garden.  I'm not one who cares much for flower gardens.  They look pretty but constantly weeding something that really has no real practical purpose other than beatification, just doesn't become a priority here.  For example, this flower garden is sporting a dandelion 'bush'  that is as tall as I am.

So...I took out Eric's little evergreen that he got in kindergarten and replanted it elsewhere.  Dan got on the tractor and ran his bucket over the garden--taking about 1/2 foot of the soil with him.

He dug a little more until he got to the clay.

We have a huge pile of sand in the back.  It was here when we moved here.  Dan took a few bucketfulls of sand from behind the barn and filled the hole.

Level out the sand a bit and you have a new sandbox for the kids.

And Lincoln has somewhere to dig that does not involve my vegetable garden.

The kids have been playing there all afternoon.  In fact, it's after supper and 2 boys are in there again.  Every kid needs a sandbox.  I'm going to start garage saling to look for some second hand Tonka trucks.

Pictures of Kids

We've got a canola field directly behind our house and it would be a shame not to use that brilliant yellow background for a few pictures of the kids.  It is my intent to enlarge these ones and put them on my wall in the living room.  All family members will get a copy too.
